Over-Wetting — Victoria BC
TOO MUCH
WATER.
MORE IS NOT
BETTER.
Over-wetting happens when more water is applied to the carpet than the fibre and environment can handle. The result is extended drying times, increased risk of wicking, and in extreme cases, damage to the carpet or subfloor.
What Over-Wetting Does
When carpet is saturated, water penetrates deep into the pile and backing. That water has to go somewhere — and if the extraction step does not recover enough of it, the remaining moisture sits in the carpet for hours. As it slowly evaporates, it can carry dissolved soil upward through the fibre, causing carpet wicking after cleaning. carpet still wet after cleaning can also create conditions for odour and, in severe cases, microbial activity.

WHY IT HAPPENS.
The Cause
Over-wetting is usually the result of equipment that delivers large volumes of water without sufficient extraction power to match. It can also happen when a cleaner applies more solution than the carpet needs, assuming that more water means a deeper clean. In reality, it is carpet cleaning residue and agitation that do the cleaning — the water is just the carrier.
Why Fibre Type Matters
Different fibres respond differently to excess moisture. Wool can absorb significant water and is prone to browning and shrinkage if over-wetted. Synthetic fibres like nylon and polyester are more water-tolerant but can still wick and develop odour if left damp too long. Understanding carpet fibre types is essential to controlling moisture.
THE FIX IS
LESS WATER.
Low-moisture cleaning applies only the water the fibre needs — and extracts it thoroughly. Less water in means less water to remove, faster drying, and a dramatically lower risk of wicking and over-wetting problems.
The SpeedyDry Approach
Controlled moisture. Not flooding.
SpeedyDry uses a low-moisture process designed to clean effectively without saturating the carpet. If your carpet was over-wetted by a previous cleaning and you are dealing with wicking, slow drying, or odour, a corrective assessment can identify the problem and what can be done.
