Olefin Carpet Cleaning | How to Clean Olefin Fibre | SpeedyDry
Carpet Fibres
OLEFIN LOVES
OIL. THAT'S
THE PROBLEM.
OLEFIN IS
HYDROPHOBIC.
Olefin (polypropylene) is the most moisture-resistant synthetic carpet fibre — it is nearly impossible to stain with water-based spills. But its powerful affinity for oil makes it one of the most challenging fibres to keep clean in traffic areas.
What Is Olefin Carpet?
Olefin is a synthetic polypropylene fibre used in commercial carpet, Berber-style loop pile, and outdoor carpet. It is inexpensive, highly resistant to moisture and chemical stains, and does not absorb water. In Greater Victoria, olefin is common in commercial spaces, strata common areas, basement carpets, and Berber-style installations in family homes.
HOW OLEFIN
INTERACTS WITH
WATER AND OIL.
Fibre Behaviour
Olefin is hydrophobic (water-repelling) and oleophilic (oil-loving). It will not absorb water-based spills — they sit on the surface and can be blotted away. But oily soil from skin, cooking, pets, and traffic adheres strongly to olefin fibres and is very difficult to remove. This is why olefin carpet in traffic areas develops persistent dark paths that resist standard cleaning. The oil bonds to the fibre surface and requires specific surfactant chemistry to suspend and remove.
WHAT CAN
GO WRONG?
Risks
Olefin carpet is prone to: persistent oily soil in traffic lanes that resists standard cleaning, fibre crushing and matting (olefin has low resilience), and heat sensitivity (olefin has a low melting point and can be damaged by hot equipment). The oil-bonding characteristic means that water-only cleaning or generic detergent may not effectively address the soil — the carpet cleaning chemistry must be selected for oily soil removal.
The SpeedyDry Approach
Target the oil. Control the heat.
SpeedyDry uses surfactant chemistry specifically selected for the oily soil challenge on olefin carpet. The process avoids excessive heat that could damage the fibre, uses controlled moisture, and focuses on thorough extraction of the oily soil and solution. For olefin carpet with persistent traffic-lane soiling, a corrective assessment can determine whether the issue is removable soil or permanent fibre damage.
